speaking lizards?
a very different thing that i got to see in NE India was that the geckos (common lizards) over there make a particular sound it goes like tuk, tuk, tuk, tuk……..
Itz really irriatiing, u cant sleep even at night coz of this disturbing sound.
I wanna knw why they make this sound, coz in north, west and south i havent seen any lizards speaking/ making sound.

Geckos, of the Family Gekkonidae, compose some 1000 species of the world’s 3300 species of lizards. There are four sub-families of Geckos, and the species of the most numerous sub-family, Gekkoninae, are the ones most likely to “talk”.
In fact, the name “gecko” is an onomotopeia, meaning that the name of the animal comes from the sound that they make.
The Tokay Gecko from southeast Asia, is the gecko that makes the biggest sound “tuko-tuko” or “geh-ko, geh-ko”.
Males make the sound, as it is both a mating call and a territorial call. As a mating call, it attracts females. As a territorial call, it deters other males.
Since most geckos are nocturnal, sound is the best way in which they communicate. Sure, there are day geckos, but fewer than 100 species of them exist, and they still have a voice (vestigal and inherited from their nocturnal ancestors).
I kept and bred geckos in captivity for 15 years, and wrote a number of natural history and captive care and husbandry and reproductive articles on this marvellous family of lizards.
