In Alain de Botton’s engaging e-book, The Art of Travel, he distinguishes between the anticipation and recollection of journey versus the fact of really traveling.

When writing a few day in your protagonist’s life, you don’t start with what he had for breakfast or that his automotive wouldn’t start except it’s germane to the plot or his character. You compress. You choose and embellish. You toss out. All the small print of your story must combine to accentuate real life in an effort to create one thing interesting and of inventive merit. When I started writing the first novel in the Osgoode Trilogy, Conduct in Query, I had to learn it wasn’t mandatory to construct the whole metropolis with prolonged descriptions of setting and character, before Harry Jenkins [the protagonist lawyer] could do anything.
